Major Peter Benning, USMC, Marine Operations Officer
Maj Benning currently serves as the Marine Detachment Operations Officer.
Maj Benning graduated from the Naval Academy in May of 2004 and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Following graduation from the Academy, Second Lieutenant Benning attended the Basic School in Quantico, VA. After graduating from the basic school Second Lieutenant Benning was assigned to Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 (MATSG 21) in Florida as a Student Naval Aviator. While in flight school he was promoted to First Lieutenant and graduated flight school in October of 2006. After earning his wings, Lieutenant Benning was assigned to the CH-46 Fleet Replacement Squadron HMMT-164 in Pendleton, CA. He graduated as a CH-46 copilot in March of 2007.
In April of 2007 Lieutenant Benning reported to MAG 26 and HMM-365 in New River, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan in March of 2008 as part of the ACE for the 24th MEU in support of OEF. In July of 2008 He was promoted to Captain and returned from Afghanistan in November of 2008. Upon his return to New River, HMM-365 folded up its flag and VMM-365 stood up in its place. Captain Benning was part of the transition team and re-designated as an MV-22 pilot.
Captain Benning deployed twice more as an MV-22 Pilot to Afghanistan with VMM-365. Both times were in support of OEF. He was deployed from June to December of 2010 and January to June of 2012.
In September of 2012 Captain Benning was assigned to MAG-26 operations as the Current Operations Officer. In March of 2013 Captain Benning was reassigned to HMX-1 in Quantico, VA to take part in the squadron’s transition from the CH-46 to the MV-22. He was promoted to Major in September of 2014. Major Benning served in HMX-1 until June of 2016. He deployed multiple times to multiple locations around the world in support of the Office of the President.
