LCDR McMahon is originally from Chatham NJ.  He received his bachelor's degree in political science from Boston College in 1998.  For the next three years, he worked as an aide to the Mayor of Cambridge, a Massachusetts state representative, and served as John Kerry's personal aide and driver for a year before heading back to Boston College for law school.  After getting his JD in 2004, LCDR McMahon was a state prosecutor in Massachusetts for the next seven years in Bristol and then Middlesex Counties.  He then decided to switch gears, and in 2011 commissioned in the Navy JAG Corps as a Direct Appointment.  During his first tour, he served as a command services, legal assistance, and trial defense attorney in Norfolk, Virginia. During his second tour he was an Appellate Defense Attorney in DC, after which he reported aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT in Coronado, California, as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate.  LCDR McMahon then served as Staff Judge Advocate for the Commander of Naval Base Coronado as well as for Commander, Navy Region Southwest.

LCDR McMahon reported to the US Naval Academy in July 2021 as the Law Section Head and is currently teaching NL400 (Law for the Junior Officer).
