Current Nimitz Library Resources & Services

Library Hours and Operations

Nimitz Library is open and our hours are available here.

There are a number of building modifications in place including reduced, distanced seating, limited use of the elevators, fewer restrooms, up/down only stairwells, and availability of cleaning supplies. Changes are in effect as a result of COVID-19 and a significant renovation to the library's main floor.

The U.S. Naval Academy is closed to visitors. Library use is only available to those on the Yard.

Helpful information for library users

Electronic databases, ebooks, and journals remain available for students, faculty, and staff.  If you need to access resources from off of the Yard, please visit our Guide to Off-Campus Access.
Accessing Physical Materials: Available

Library materials are available for pickup in the lobby or by delivery to midshipmen in ROM status. To request items for pick up, visit Nimitz Search or log in here, search for the item you'd like and click "Request". Requested items will be bagged and placed on the table in the library lobby for pick up. If you are in ROM or ISO, please indicate as much on your request and we will make arrangements for delivery to your room. Detailed instructions can be found here .

Library staff can provide scanned articles or book chapters from items we own to midshipmen and/or faculty. Information Literacy Instruction: Available
R&I librarians will offer a range of options for information literacy instruction, including synchronous, asynchronous, virtual, and in-person on a case-by-case basis. The R&I Information Literacy Team recommends that instruction take place virtually this semester. Due to the Nimitz renovations, 227 is the only classroom available in the building and it can only accommodate the smallest class sizes. In-person IL sessions would likely need to take place in the class’ normal meeting space. Librarians and instructors will work together to design IL instruction that meets the needs of the midshipmen. Please get in touch via the subject liaison contact list with any questions. Not sure who to contact? Email Maria Koshute, Information Literacy Coordinator, at
Interlibrary Loan: Available

Nimitz LIbrary staff will continue to process interlibrary loan requests for book, articles and book chapters, though we may experience delays as libraries across the globe continue to offer limited service. Users must be logged in for off-campus access to use interlibrary loan. Questions should be directed to

Users with overdue Interlibrary Loan books in their possession should return them to the library as soon as possible. If you have circumstances preventing this please contact

Special Collections & Archives (SC&A): Appointment Only and Digital Collections

The SC&A Reading Room is open by appointment only when the library is open. Appointments may be requested by contacting Dr. Jennifer Bryan at or x36904. Digitized SC&A materials are freely accessible, and SC& staff remain via email or telephone for research help. The SC&A web page provides links to digital collections, online finding aids, and contact information for SC&A staff.
