Library Hours and Operations

Nimitz Library will be closed until further notice.  Any changes to library hours will be posted on this page.  During this time library staff will provide digital resources and research support for USNA users. All library events have been cancelled.

Helpful information for library users

Accessing Online Materials: Available
Electronic databases and journals remain available for students, faculty, and staff.  If you need to access resources from off of the Yard, please visit our Guide to Off-Campus Access. Library staff are constantly adding the additional resources that have been made freely available in recent weeks. See the New/Expanded Databases column to see what's currently available. If you need assistance finding and accessing ebooks, please use this guide.
Accessing Physical Materials: Limited Availability
Faculty, staff, and midshipmen can arrange to pickup library materials using this form. Library staff can provide scanned articles or book chapters from items we own to midshipmen and/or faculty through Local Article Delivery. If off campus, you must be connected for off-campus access to log in. Questions about Local Article Delivery should be directed to
Research Help: Available

At this time, research help is available to the USNA community in a variety of formats. Starting May 26th, librarians will be available via the library’s chat service during the hours below:

Sun: 1800-2100

Mon - Wed: 0900-1200, 1300-1600, 1800-2100

Thur - Fri: 0900-1200, 1300-1600

Users can also get help through the library's FAQ, LibGuides, or by getting in touch with a subject specialist librarian. Research appointments are available via email, Google Hangouts, or telephone. 
Course Materials Support: Available

Faculty can request that library staff scan limited amounts of material from our physical collection to be used as course materials. Additional information about the service can be found on the request form. Faculty can also request that we digitize A/V materials from our collection for use in a course.  Requests for this service should be directed to

Information Literacy Instruction: Available

The Library is offering information literacy instruction in a variety of formats to support online classes. Interlibrary Loan: Digital Items Only

Nimitz LIbrary staff will continue to process interlibrary loan requests for electronic articles and book chapters, though we may experience delays as libraries across the globe are closing or limiting services. Because Nimitz Library is closed, requests for physical items will be cancelled until further notice. Users must be logged in for off-campus access to use interlibrary loan. Questions should be directed to

Users with Interlibrary Loan books in their possession need not worry about returning those books at this time.  When the library reopens, users will be asked to return books as soon as they are able.

Due Dates Extended Until Further Notice

Overdue notices for books will not be issued and users are not expected to return books at this time. If you currently have a book from Nimitz Library or Interlibrary Loan, please consider it renewed until further notice.

If necessary, users can return books to the library using the book drops located outside the library’s front doors or in the vestibule near the library entrance. For health and safety reasons, library staff will not be processing returned materials immediately. Users will not incur penalties for overdue materials.

Special Collections & Archives (SC&A): Digital Collections Only
The SC&A Reading Room will be closed when the library is closed, but staff is available via email or telephone for research help. Digitized SC&A materials are freely accessible. The SC&A web page provides links to digital collections, online finding aids, and contact information for SC&A staff. 
Check Out for Leaving USNA: Available
To complete the Library portion of your USNA check out sheet please contact Nicholas Brown. If you have any items from Nimitz or Interlibrary Loan you will be directed to return them by placing them in the book drop outside of the Nimitz front doors. If you are unable to physically access USNA alternate arrangements will be made. If a signable check out sheet is provided a digital signature will be given, others will receive an email verifying that your library account is clear.
