On June 24, 1921, he was admitted to the United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 1925, but resigned from the Academy the following year, on October 23, 1922.
After leaving the Naval Academy, Garrigues enrolled in Franklin & Marshall College, graduating with the Class of 1925. While at Franklin & Marshall, he starred on both the basketball and football teams. After college, Garrigues briefly played professional football for the Staten Island Stapletons, before taking a job as assistant basketball coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in 1934. appointed Athletics Officer at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. In April of 1942, he was

The Edward B. Garrigues Scrapbook, comprising 1.42 linear feet of documentation, spans from 1909 to 1993, with the bulk of the contents having been created between 1920 and 1946. The scrapbook is largely the product of Garrigues studies at both the United States Naval Academy and Franklin & Marshall College, his career as a basketball coach, and his service as a Navy Reservist during World War II.
Included in the scrapbook are photographs, letters, postcards, clipping, certificates, tickets, transcripts, and orders.
The Edward B. Garrigues Scrapbook is roughly divided into five sections. The first,
spanning 1920-1922, covers Garrigues' enlisted service in the U.S. Navy and time as
a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. Topics depicted or discussed
include battleship coaling operations, admission to the United States Naval Academy,
views of Havana, Italian General Armando Diaz's review of the Brigade, the 1921 Navy
Football and Basketball seasons, Masqueraders performances, boxing tournaments, the
nomination of African-American Emile Treville Holley, the 1922 summer practice
cruise from the Virgin Islands to Halifax aboard U.S.S.
From roughly 1922 until 1925, the scrapbook covers Garrigues' time as a
student-athlete at Franklin & Marshall College. Entries during this period
pertain to Garrigues' participation in Franklin & Marshall athletics (especially
football and basketball), Herbert Hartley's command of S.S.
Following the Franklin & Marshall entries, and spanning until 1938, the scrapbook pertains to Garrigues' professional football and high school coaching careers. Included are materials regarding Garrigues' experiences playing professional football for the Staten Island Stapletons, and his 1937-1938 tenure as head basketball coach for Wilson High School in Camden, New Jersey.
From 1941 through 1946, the scrapbook focuses on Garrigues' service in the U.S. Naval
Reserves during World War II. These entries cover Garrigues' commission in the Naval
Reserves to serve as an Athletics Officer at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, instruction
in local defense at the Naval Training School in Boston, command of U.S.S.
Following the wartime section, the scrapbook covers such topics as the inauguration of New Jersey Governor Alfred E. Driscoll, Garrigues' continued participation in the Naval Reserves based in Camden New Jersey, and Franklin & Marshall alumni activities. Also included at the end of the scrapbook are Garrigues' childhood report cards and clippings covering his participation in Camden High School athletics.
Filed separately from the scrapbook are several portraits of Garrigues, as well as a letter to Captain Eli Vinock in connection with Vinock's research on prior-enlisted midshipmen.
