Meet the Current Members of the Team!

August Roberts

August does Parkour. PARKOUR!

About me:

I’m pretty lucky being a runner from Colorado, which is by far the best state in the Union. As you can probably tell from the above image, I like to pretend I have other athletic abilities besides running. This was actually taken on Spring Break tour with the USNA Men’s Glee Club in Los Angeles on the muscle beach at Santa Monica, thus why I am wearing long sleeves. My dad, an Air Force Master Sergeant, instilled the discipline needed to succeed at the Academy, and my mom pushed me academically so I could pursue my desired path.

Why did you join marathon?

I guess I just had to be different. My goal is to become one of those crazy old guys who lives in the mountains and does ultramarathons.

Most remarkable running achievement:

I ran into Galen Rupp at Nike World HQ, which I consider an accomplishment. My running career has had many moments that were personally remarkable, but I think the best is yet to come.

Favorite ice cream flavor:

Huckleberry, because it makes me sound well traveled and healthy.

If I could go back in time, I would…

Stock up on Schezuan sauce and make a fortune selling it in the present.

Class year: 3/C

Brendan Fish

Kangaroos are Brendan's Best Friends (jk we are)

About Me:
My name is Brendan Fish and I’m from Columbia, Missouri. I love the mountains, a nice sunset, and the beach, basically anything outside. I want to be a jet pilot and I think space is fascinating, which is why I’m an aerospace engineering major. Because I’m an Eagle Scout, I’m also involved in NESA, as well as Midshipman Action Group, VT-NA, and Catholic Choir.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I really enjoy running and the opportunity it gives me to grow closer with people, explore, and experience the outdoors. And, sadly, I was not gifted with inhuman swimming skills so triathlon team wasn’t really an option.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
My most remarkable running achievement was definitely when my high school cross country running group ran to get ice cream during practice the day before the race, as part of tradition of course. In all seriousness, my 20 mile training run last year at 7:05 pace was one of my bigger achievements.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Extreme Moose Tracks

If I could go back in time, I would...
Spend more time in the mountains

Class Year: 3/C

Chase Standage

Standage thinks SoCal is hot

About Me:
I’ve called Southern California home for the first 18 years of my life, and can’t say that I’ve ever seen snow yet, or even a general change in the seasons. Some of my more practiced hobbies include flying, diving, running, archery, and eating copious amounts of food. While here, I also plan to pursue my passions in the field of aerospace engineering and other science-y stuff.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
Throughout my four years of high school, I ran cross country and track. It started out as just a necessity, something to do mostly, but soon developed into a full-fledged passion for running. Upon graduating, I knew that I would never just give up running, and here I am. I’ve also never run a full marathon, so that ought to be an adventure.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I was pretty stoked to hit 17:13 at our season-opening 5k for my senior year of cross country. Exactly one year prior, I was struggling to break a single 6 minute mile, so running 3.1 consecutive miles at 5:33 pace blew my own expectations away for the season.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?

Conor Keating

Navy 5 2015 30:45

About Me:
Conor Keating is from the State of Jefferson. He is a diehard fan of Game of Thrones, college football, and running. This year, his final year on the team, you will find him hitting the books to learn the intricacies of Thermodynamics or hitting the roads to get in his weekly long run.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined the marathon team because I've always loved running, but I was too slow for Division 1 Varsity Cross Country. I love the marathon team members and joking around with Coach Nate is always great. The marathon team opens a lot of doors for races that I otherwise would have never been able to run, such as the Boston and Chicago Marathons.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
In high school track in the 2 mile at the Districts meet, I was ~25-50 meters behind the second place man with less than 200m to go (and you needed to be in the top 2 to qualify for the state track and field meet). I sprinted to the finish and beat him by 9 hundredths of a second to advance.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Mint Chocolate Chip

If I could go back in time, I would...

Class Year: 1/C

Dan Midgette

Dan is a relay speedster

About me:

I enjoy long walks on the beach and even longer runs on the street. I hail from a small town called Bethpage on Long Island, New York. I ran track throughout my time there, and aside from competing at the national level, I’ve also made some lifetime friends. My military history has deep roots in the Coast Guard where members of my family have operated for generations. I aim to be a part of that history of service. I’m a proud Coca Cola Scholar as well as a Burger King Scholar. I look forward to the next 4 years here as an opportunity to further my running career.

Why did you join marathon/Why do you enjoy marathon team?

Running has always been a major outlet for me from a young age. Whether I was chasing the ice cream man, or the school bus I missed, I was always running somewhere. I’d also love to one day pull a Forrest Gump and run the length of the United States. Guess I have to start somewhere.

Remarkable Running achievement

In 10th grade, I was part of a nationally ranked 4x400m team that was also the first from my high school to ever progress past the state meet. In 12th grade, after some rebuilding of the team, I led a 4x800m relay team to 2 national championships. At the end of my high school career, I had PRs in the 1600, 800, and 400 as 4:46, 1:57, and 51.7 respectively.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

Drew Hudspeth

Drew Hudspeth!

About Me:
Insert important and motivational stuff about me here.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined because I want to be able to say that I challenged myself physically while I was here at USNA, and I think this team will more than help me accomplish that goal.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I honestly haven't ran competitively much before joining this team other than being in XC in high school.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Cookies and Cream

If I could go back in time, I would...
Not go back in time even if I could because everything happens for a reason and I don't want to mess with that whole space-time continuum thing.

Class Year: 3/C

Eric Hilgendorf

Eric Hilgendorf

About Me:
Eric Hilgendorf is a bizarre combination not often found in nature of avid outdoorsman and computer nerd. He loves hiking, fishing, shooting historical firearms, science fiction, and roleplaying/strategy games. Despite his new home on the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks, NC, he is a Wisconsinite at heart, however frozen and icy that heart may be. His life goals are to survive the Academy, serve in the Navy, and one day join the Musketeers and swash-buckle his way to saving the King.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined plebe year simply because I wanted to keep running long distance and the team dynamic here is amazingly supportive. After a semester long hiatus, a close friend on the team convinced me to rejoin.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I got top 10 in my age group in a Milwaukee half-Marathon. Also surviving my first marathon was quite a feat considering the stupid pace I set for the first few miles.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?

If I could go back in time, I would...

Class Year: 1/C

Garrett Yu

Garrett wears sunglasses inside

About Me:
My name is Garrett Yu, although you probably already realized that when you clicked on my name to view my bio. Thanks for that by the way! Anyways so about me: I was born in New Jersey. I moved to Hong Kong. Then after that was Beijing. Then Virginia. The Paris. Then Florida. So where am I from? I’m not really sure I guess all of those places combined maybe? I like to run. Which I guess makes sense since I’m on this team. I ran track and cross country in high school. I can speak French and Chinese pretty well and I took two semester of Spanish online so I guess you can say I’m fluent (just kidding). Used to be a theater geek and loved to sing and act. I still love to sing, especially in the shower, but unfortunately I’m not very good HA. I am very outgoing once you get to know me and I love life! My main motivator is my family. They’ve always been there to love and support me and there’s no shot I would be here without them.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
Who doesn’t love not being able to feel their legs? I just love running. It’s a great way to clear my head and just burn off any anger or frustrations I might have. It also challenges me and I like to beat challenges; with running though, you can always get better and faster so it’s like an endless challenge.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I think my most remarkable running achievement is the first marathon I ever ran: Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, PA in October 2016. It was just a huge accomplishment for me because up until that point I don’t thing I had ever run more than 10 miles at one time!

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
It’s so hard to choose ya know? I would probably say my favorite flavor is toasted coconut, salted caramel, cake batter, chocolate strawberry swirl, coffee, peanut butter oreo, strawberry cheesecake, key lime pie, cookie dough, rocky road, or mint chocolate chip.

If I could go back in time, I would...
Relive Plebe Summer because that was the best time of my life.

About Me:
I am from Duluth, MN. I grew up Nordic skiing and rowing. My favorite places in the world are boating on Lake Superior and hiking and exploring Minnesota.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I always ran in high school to cross-train for other sports. My mom used to run marathons and triathlons, so I thought why not carry on the family legacy. I love getting to travel and race in new places with the team.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?

My greatest running achievement was qualifying for Boston at the Gettysburg marathon last spring.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Chocolate peanut butter

Hannah Rose

Hannah Rose

About Me:
I am now a 2/c at this fine institution, I have been running with this team for two years now but never on the roster due to multiple injuries over the course of those two years. I am a military brat so I do not have a place to call home. I am a hermit. I enjoy traveling, Starbucks, and long walks on the beach at sunset.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I enjoy the marathon team because of the wonderful people I get to run with and I also enjoy torturing myself through running.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I survived.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?

Why Running? : I joined the marathon team because I wanted a challenge that would test not only my physical abilities but also my mental abilities. There is nothing more challenging than getting over your first wall in a race. However there is no better feeling than obtaining a runners high.

Class Year: 2/C

Joe Farrow

Farrow says Roll Tide a lot

About Me:
I hail from the great town of Auburn, Alabama (War Eagle!). I have awesome parents along with 2 sisters and a younger brother, as well as 3 cats and 2 dogs. I enjoy spending any time I can with them. I love anything to do with the outdoors (camping, hiking, bonfires, boating, golfing, running, etc.). I came to the academy because of many reasons, but most importantly to serve my country and give back to it as much as it has given to me. I’m looking forward to the next few years with the marathon team!

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined marathon team because I missed running in races. I’m not fast enough to run for the track or cross country team here, and so I joined the marathon team to have the best of both worlds, being able to race and not having the time commitment of a varsity athlete. The team is full of really cool people and I’m lucky to be able to run with them.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
My senior year of high school, I was a member of my track team’s 4x800m relay team that qualified for the state championship. We were seeded 11/14 teams in our race, so we were not the favorite to win. My team ended up running a 7:58(2:01 split for me) and winning the state championship and set the new 7A state championship meet record. On top of that our team won the team state championship, so it was a big day for me. A great way to end my high school track career.

About Me:
*Boston, MA *Member of Dirty Thirty (30 Co) *Former Bearshark (25 Co) *Operations Research Major *Hokie *Student of Life

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I want to stay fit so I don’t fall too far behind my girlfriend (a D-1 cross country and track runner) when we run together on leave and when she visits USNA. Also, having done cross country and track in high school, the team is a way to continue to enjoy running and develop friendships.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
During my senior year of high school, breaking 5 minutes in the mile, 11 minutes in the two-mile, and 18 minutes in the 5K were all big accomplishments for me. Also, after my senior year, to my surprise, I won my age division in my town’s July 4th road race. Not thinking I had a chance of winning, I left before the awards were distributed, and thus my one chance of fame and a medal were left on the table.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?

About Me:

You can find Kathia’s roots in the state of California, but she mainly stems from the sunshine state of Florida. She loves travelling and eating the occasional chocolate chip cookie.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?

I love running long distances. And with the marathon team, I get to run with some awesome people! Also, all the food you get to eat is a plus.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?

I PR’d by thirteen minutes running my second half marathon! I ran my first race in my senior year of high school and was looking forward to running a second one. The second race I decided to run happened to be the West Point Half, which is known for its crazy hills. My only goal was to complete it, so when I saw my time I was ecstatic. I now have yet to run a full marathon, which’ll be the 2017 Marine Corps Marathon (yut).

Lydia Williams

About Me:

I'm from a mountain range in the middle of nowhere in Southern California. I am an Arabic major but only know how to say simple phrases like "yes" and "no" and "I'm hungry." I like reading, camping, fishing, "shredding the gnar mannn" (or trying to and falling down), and drinking tea.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?

I never wanted to run when I lived in the mountains because there was no oxygen in the altitude, so now I'm seizing the opportunity while I live at sea level.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?

I've gotten a PR many times because I never really ran before, but the most satisfying runs often are during practice when the team is together and we are really pushing each other.

Nathalie Camacho

Nathalie runs with earbuds in

About Me:
I'm from Coral Springs, Florida, which is way down south were the word “winter” is irrelevant. I am the oldest of three, and I have two very hardworking parents who I think love the Naval Academy way more than I do. I was never really a runner, but when you attend the Naval Academy running is enforced; you just have to find a way to make it enjoyable! I write and perform my own music on the non-existent free time I have, and I am also a member of the Navy Women’s Glee Club when I am not running.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined marathon because ultimately I was a really bad runner, and I knew that if I didn’t improve, my PRT scores would never be any better, and my dream of being a Marine would be way harder to accomplish. I think what makes marathon team so great, is the fact that every person on the team is so humble and truly willing to push you and encourage you even when you don’t think you can go on. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I now am.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
Last year I participated in the Cherry Pit 10 Miler which was the longest distance I had run yet. I came in second place for my age group which, in my opinion, was also a pretty big accomplishment! My goal is to run a half marathon at some point this year, and keep working towards the full, so that I can run the Marine Corps Marathon next year!

About Me:

I absolutely love life! I have been immensely grateful to experience my joy of travelling during my time at the Naval Academy. Over the past year, I’ve traveled over 20,000 miles and seen six countries. I’m thankful to be in the best major on the Yard—Cyber Operations. I genuinely like to learn new things like scuba diving, rock climbing, and anything related to computers! If I don’t have my nose in a book curled up somewhere with a cup of tea, you might find me experimenting with a new recipe in the kitchen, singing with the Glee Club, or trying my hand a new art technique because my favorite pastime is painting. I’m very excited to add running a marathon to the experiences of my awesome time at the Academy!

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
I joined marathon team for the mental and physical test that it is. I enjoy the camaraderie and the exhilaration you feel after a worthwhile run.

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
I hadn’t run much more than about a mile or so before I started conditioning for Plebe Summer. Thanks to the Navy, I have become a runner and I really enjoy it! I am by no means the fastest nor do I have the greatest endurance, but my greatest running achievement has definitely been learning to love the sport through challenging myself to be better than I was on the last run. My first race ever was this past year’s Annapolis 10 Miler and it was a phenomenal experience—I’m so glad to have found this hobby and opportunity to compete with myself!

To make me get back into running and keep it up.  Also to find new friends, as most of my good friends from high school ran cross country or track with me.

About me:

From the good ole town of Clayton, North Carolina, coming to USNA was a total plot twist for me. Though I’m gone to Carolina in my mind, the merry land is a pseudo-decent place I guess, and I’m excited to be here. Currently I’m an Aerospace Engineering major (catch me roaming the halls at 2 am), and would like to fly. In high school I played soccer, swam, and ran track. Crazy life goals include owning a vineyard, exploring the final frontier, starting a blue-grass band, and building a library bigger than General Mattis’.

Why did you join Marathon?

Wanted to challenge myself, and I really like finisher’s t-shirts tbh.

Achievement?

I ran a marathon last year… that was a bucket list item for sure. I am definitely excited to run more and improve this year.

Trevor Karn

About Me:
Trevor Karn hails from Minnesota, a far better state than Oregon (ed. False). If you have seen both Portlandia and Fargo, that is obvious (ed. again, false). Trevor is a Math major who studied Arabic for his first two years at the Academy.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?
Trevor joined track in 8th grade, as a thrower. When he got tired of winning, he decided to try running the mile, and even though he took last place by over a minute he decided to run cross country at Wayzata High School under the coaching legend Bill Miles. After realizing he still wasn't fast there, he decided to just run far so that people would forget how slow he was, and ended up on the Navy Marathon team, where he is now the Men's Representative for the team!

Most remarkable running achievement? Have you ever beaten a goal, won a race, or gotten a PR?
At the 2016 Baltimore-Annapolis Trail Half-Marathon, Trevor took first place for his age group!

Xavier Haley

Xavier just got PRK apparently

About Me:

My name is Xavier Haley and I am from Adams, Massachusetts. I love everything about the Naval Academy from my major in history to watching the football games, and especially the marathon team. If I am not studying, running, or in class, you can probably find me at the piano in Smoke Hall.

Why did you join marathon / Why do you enjoy marathon team?

I joined the marathon team here because I have always dreamed of running the Boston Marathon, and I figured it was time to make my dream a reality. I love running with the team and joking around. The people get you through the long runs.

Most remarkable running achievement?

At Steamtown Marathon in 2016, I ran a PR of 2 hours 54 minutes and 55 seconds, which qualified me for the Boston Marathon on April 16th, 2018. I am super stoked to be able to finally run my dream race.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?

Definitely cookies and cream

If I could go back in time, I would…

Have started running marathons earlier. Chicago Marathon 2017 will be my seventh and the Boston will be my eighth. I definitely wish I had started earlier though.
