Assistant Professor of Mathematics (Mathematics/Applied Mathematics) 

The Mathematics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, invites applications for tenure-track positions in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, with a preference at the Assistant Professor level, to begin the Fall semester of 2020.  Candidates with appropriate experience will be considered at a higher rank.

The position involves:

  • Teaching approximately 9 contact hours per semester with small section sizes (10-25 students) and 2-4 preparations per academic year.
  • Conducting and publishing peer-reviewed research.
  • Mentoring undergraduate research projects.
  • Service to the institution and department consistent with standards in the academic profession.

The Mathematics Department is the largest department at the Academy, with 40 civilians with PhD’s and 22 military officers with advanced degrees. The department offers majors in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, and Mathematics with Economics.  The U.S. Naval Academy values its diverse faculty and student body. Candidates with a commitment and demonstrated ability to attract and retain students from underrepresented groups, including women, are particularly encouraged to apply.

This is a 10-month, tenure-track federal excepted service position. The initial contract period is for three years. Faculty members receive full federal government service benefits.  Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Assistant Professor of Statistics

The Mathematics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis MD invites applications for tenure-track positions in Statistics (with a preference at the Assistant Professor level). The appointments will begin in the fall semester of 2020.

The successful applicant must be strongly committed to teaching at the undergraduate level and to producing high-quality peer-reviewed research. A qualified candidate must be a U.S. citizen and have received a Ph.D. in an appropriate field no later than June 2020. Candidates with a commitment and demonstrated ability to attract and retain students from underrepresented groups (including women) are particularly encouraged to apply.

William R. Davis '68 Distinguished Chair of Mathematics

 The Mathematics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, invites applications for the William R. Davis ‘68 Distinguished Chair in Mathematics.  An initial appointment of one year is anticipated, with a possibility for renewal for an additional year.  Holders of the Distinguished Chair could be career academics (possibly on sabbatical) with strong research programs, up-and-coming postdocs who are rising stars in their disciplines, researchers at government labs or agencies, technical leaders in industry, or other exceptional candidates. The Distinguished Chair is expected to be an active participant in the department. Their involvement might include mentoring midshipmen and faculty, or developing our research and teaching capabilities, particularly in their field of specialization. The Distinguished Chair will teach one course per semester, perhaps co-teaching advanced classes in their field alongside USNA faculty members. While any area of expertise will be considered, the department is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to our programs in operations research, statistics, data science, econometrics, or applied mathematics.
