    Apollo's Fire Baroque Orchestra

Hailed asone of the pre-eminent period-instrument ensembles” and named for the classical god of music and the sun, Apollo’s Fire was founded in 1992 by the award- winning young harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell.  Sorrell envisioned an ensemble dedicated to the baroque ideal that music should evoke the various Affekts or passions in the listeners. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric.

"The renowned baroque orchestra . . . [plays] with personality and temperament." —THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Apollo’s Fire is a superb ensemble that pairs vigor with finesse, enlisting period instruments to play baroque fare in a rigorously informed style." —THE WASHINGTON POST

“Apollo’s Fire has forged a vibrant, life-affirming approach to the re-making of early music… European ears have begun to appreciate the blend of intellect and artistry concocted by harpsichordist Sorrell and her colleagues. Their seductive vision of musical authenticity is guided by a shared commitment to honest emotional expression, rooted in period style yet never its slave.” —BBC Music Magazine

    ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY
Music is a form of communication – a language that resonates with people in an emotional and spiritual way, touching people in a way that words cannot. The treatises from the 17th and 18th centuries all talk about “Affekt” – the emotional character of the music. The performer’s role was to evoke a particular Affekt or emotional state in the listeners – whether that be joy or contemplation or rage or despair or triumph. The baroque performer used every possible means to cast his emotional spell on the audience – rhetoric, gesture, harmony. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of artists who believe passionately that our job is to communicate – to take the listeners with us on an emotional journey. If, at the end of two hours, the audience is moved to tears, or joy, or laughter, or prayer, then we have done a good night’s work.

    – Jeannette Sorrell, conductor, Apollo’s Fire

    Moscow Festival Ballet

    Chopiniana

    Music by Frederic Chopin

    Romeo and Juliet

    Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikowski

Chopin’s Chopiniana opens a magical evening of classic ballet culminating with the greatest love story of all time – Romeo and Juliet… a truly unforgettable evening of ballet performed by leading dancers from across Russia along with stars of the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets.

The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Radchenko, sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company, continuing the grand traditions which define the best in Russian ballet.

Since its inception, the Moscow Festival Ballet Theatre has completed multiple tours of Europe with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, two tours of the UK including capacity audiences at London’s famed Coliseum, and enjoyed tremendous success in Turkey, Greece, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.

“An impressive performance of classical ballet, energized with dramatic expression and sensational steps.”
    —The Durham Chronicle

“The dancers of the Moscow Festival Ballet spoke to the soul through the body...”  —The Charleston Post and Courier

    43rd Annual Spring Oratorio

         Bernstein: Candide

One of the most iconic American compositions: Candide.  This is opera for everyone that thinks they don’t like opera.  The ultimate parody – the ultimate satire, Candide is among the funniest and most entertaining of the 'opera comic' genre.  Freakishly cleaver and complicated, it reaches hilariously epic proportions of the ‘theatre of the absurd’ while conveying a serious message about humanity, optimism, and reconciliation.

(From the opening of show) – Narrator: “This is Leonard Bernstein’s Candide - which is not to be confused with Voltare’s Candide upon which it is based.  Voltare’s Candide is a small novella in which no one sings, whereas Leonard Bernstein’s Candide is a large operetta in which almost everyone insists upon it!”

Join us for an extremely fun and rare evening of music with a semi-staged presentation of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, performed by the critically acclaimed USNA Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra.
