Inaugural Women in STEM Symposium

New to NASEC this year is the inaugural Women in STEM symposium. This event, an exploration of the challenges faced by women in STEM and a celebration of their accomplishments, will take place prior to the start of the rest of the conference in the afternoon of Saturday, 2 November. Select schools are invited to nominate up to three undergraduate female students and their faculty mentors to attend. Nominees for this pre-NASEC symposium must be enrolled in an ROTC program, majoring in a STEM discipline, and have demonstrated the potential to become future leaders within science, engineering and technology.

Professor Geraldine Richmond, University of Oregon The plenary speaker for the symposium will be  Professor Geraldine Richmond , University of Oregon. Professor Richmond is an expert in the chemistry that occurs at marine and fresh water surfaces. She is a co-founder of COACh, an organization dedicated to assisting in the success and impact of women scientists and engineers.

Other symposium activities include a welcome address by CAPT Valerie Overstreet, US Naval Academy Chief of Staff and B.S. in Mathematics, Virginia Tech, a poster session for participants, and an interactive panel with women STEM faculty.
