Naval Academy Midshipmen Donate 566 Pairs of Shoes to Planet Aid

The Naval Academy Midshipman Action Group collected 566 pairs of shoes May 19 from the Class of 2017 to donate to Planet Aid.

Planet Aid is a nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used clothes and shoes and supports international development projects.

As the plebes prepared for the traditional Herndon climb marking the end of their plebe year, they took off their athletic shoes, leaving them behind in the grass as they charged the monument. Midshipmen from MAG – led by Midshipman 1st Class Emily Hughes – gathered the shoes, tying pairs together so they wouldn’t get lost.

"I have been doing this project for the last three years with Planet Aid, and it's so easy to do because Plebes throw off their shoes to do the Herndon Climb,” said Hughes. “Why not ask them to donate them?"

Community Relations Director Miriam Stanicic said that while the shoe drive has been going on for years, the partnership with Planet Aid is relatively new.

The mids bagged the shoes and transferred them to a van to take them to the local Planet Aid chapter.

The Midshipman Action Group was established in 1992 and is supported by the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation. MAG organizes more than 50 educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects on the local and national level, employing more than 500 midshipmen throughout the academic year.

During the 2013-14 academic year, the midshipmen contributed 25,000 hours of community service.
