Naval Academy Museum Curator Honored for 50 Years of Service


The first floor rear gallery of the Naval Academy Museum was christened the James Cheevers Gallery during a ceremony April 29 honoring the museum curator’s 50 years of government service.

Naval Academy Museum Director Claude Berube, former Naval Academy Museum Director Scott Harmon, and former Museum Volunteer Director Dr. James McMurtry spoke at the dedication.

"Mr. Cheevers has served the Naval Academy as curator and senior historian with the utmost distinction, professionalism, information and ethics, “ said Naval Academy Museum Director Claude Berube. “When it comes to understanding the history of the Naval Academy, there simply has been no equal. I look forward to many more years of his continued service as the steward of our naval heritage."

Cheevers is the Associate Director and Senior Curator of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, where he has been employed for the past 47 years. He is responsible for most of the objects in the museum collection including paintings, edged weapons, uniforms, medals, and manuscripts. He is also a renowned authority on the history of the Naval Academy and its graduates.

Cheevers graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1963 with a degree in history. He went on to a three-year service in the U.S. Army where he became the curator of the 2d Infantry Division Historical Center and later curator of U.S. Army Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, Ga.  Upon leaving active service, he was hired as the first civilian curator of the Infantry Museum.

Cheevers transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy Museum as Curator of Collections in 1967 and was promoted to Senior Curator in 1971 and to Associate Director in 1982. He helps manage an extensive collection of art and artifacts related to the history of the U.S. Navy with focusing on the officer corps and the history of the Naval Academy. He has added thousands of items to the collection and developed numerous exhibitions over the past 47 years.

He is a member of a number of professional organizations and has served as volunteer Executive Secretary, Historic Naval Ships Association since 1985.
