Press Release: #073-14

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Naval Academy is installing a turnstile gate along the Naval Academy wall on Hanover Street near the academy’s Gate 3.

“The gate is being installed for the convenience of academy residents when shopping, eating or sightseeing in downtown Annapolis and returning after the pedestrian gate is closed,” said Naval Academy Public Affairs Officer Cmdr. John Schofield, U.S. Navy.

Visitors and residents will still be able to walk onto the Naval Academy grounds through the pedestrian gate during normal gate hours: Sunday-Thursday 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Visitors 18 years-of-age or older must present a government issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, to enter the grounds of the academy.

The new turnstile gate will be available 24 hours a day but will only be accessible from Hanover Street with a Department of Defense ID card (Common Access Cards and dependent ID cards). Additionally, visitors leaving the academy after the Gate 3 pedestrian gate is closed will be able to exit through the turnstile gate without a DoD ID.

The approximately $280,000 project was designed by ATI, Inc. of Columbia, Md. and is being constructed by Tidewater, Inc. of Elkridge, Md. The gate is expected to be complete and open for use in early fall.
