Press Release: #081-14
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Naval Academy’s Gate 1 (at the intersection of King George and Randall Streets) will be under construction for approximately three weeks beginning Sept. 18. The closure is in support of the replacement of high-temperature-hot-water-lines that provide heating to buildings located in the vicinity of Gate 1.
Gate 1 will temporarily close to incoming traffic beginning Sept. 18 but will remain open for incoming traffic Monday through Friday from 6-9 a.m. to support morning rush hour entry. Pedestrian access, the Visitor Access Center and the adjacent VAC parking lot will remain open. Outbound Gate 1 traffic will not be affected except between 6-9 a.m. Monday – Friday.
Construction will be conducted 24 hours a day for the duration of the three weeks. The contractor was asked to minimize as much noise as possible during the overnight hours. While it is anticipated that the first six days and the last six days will be the noisiest, residents in the vicinity of Gate 1 may notice construction noise for the duration of the project.
During this time, Gate 3 (at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Hanover Street) will be open for incoming traffic on the same schedule as Gate 1:
- Sunday – Thursday from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
As a reminder, only vehicles with a Department of Defense or USNA credentialed driver or passenger are permitted to drive onto the academy grounds.
