POSTED ON: Wednesday, September 9, 2015 12:59 PM by mediarelations@usna.edu

#056-15     ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Naval Academy Museum will open a new exhibit “Warrior Writers: The U.S. Naval Institute" beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, through Jan. 31, 2016.

The exhibit features literary work primarily from junior officers during their active duty service since the 1870’s. The majority of the literature focuses on controversies, issues, and trends of the time and is accompanied by over 100 artifacts including writings, weapons and tools from the authors. The artifacts are from the combined collections of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum and the U.S. Naval Institute as well as some on loan from recent authors.

In addition to the exhibit, a “Warrior Writer’s” podcast will be available each week beginning Monday, Sept. 14, discussing decades of naval events starting in the 1870’s. These 20-30 minute podcasts are part of a 14-episode series and will be conducted by blogger Cdr. Salamander. Each episode will feature interviews with Naval Academy History Professor Emeritus and noted naval historian Dr. Craig Symonds and Naval Academy Museum Director Claude Berube. The podcast will be available through iTunes and the U.S. Naval Academy Museum website and Facebook page.

The U.S. Naval Institute was founded by officers at the Naval Academy in 1873. The institute was co-located at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in Preble Hall from 1939 to 1999 and is now located at Beach Hall on the grounds of the Naval Academy.

The Naval Institute will post information weekly about the exhibit on their social media accounts found at:  https://www.facebook.com/NavalInstitute and https://twitter.com/navalinstitute.
