Training to Survive Alaska

POSTED ON: Friday, August 17, 2018 8:57 AM by Maddie Darbie

This summer, 12 Midshipmen spent 22 days in the Chugach Mountain Range in Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). They hiked over glaciers while harnessed into rope teams, navigated dangerous icy terrain in near zero visibility, and slept in "quinzhees," or snow huts, they built themselves. This training excursion gave these Midshipmen the chance to challenge themselves, to lead a team in the face of adversity, and to be problem solvers in difficult foreign environments.

Midshipmen 3/C Quinn Schneider recorded the training exercise in an extraordinary three segment documentary that you can view by visiting the following links:

"Becoming the leader you're meant to be requires repeated practice, experimentation, risk-taking, and failure." - NOLS
