CDR Dave Durkin, a Permanent Military Professor in the Naval Academy Chemistry Department, recently contributed to a research initiative that may play a role in mitigating the airborne spread of COVID-19.
This collaborative research effort, spearheaded by Prof Yun Shen at UC Riverside and Prof Danmeng Shuai at The George Washington University, involved fabricating electrospun nanofibrous air filters that capture 99.9% of coronavirus aerosols, far surpassing the effectiveness of cotton masks, neck gaiters, and even surgical masks. These novel materials hold promise for applications in personal protective equipment (PPE).
