McCain Virtual Conference 2021, Day 1 - Michael Morell, Mitt Regan, The Ethics of Intelligence Operations

POSTED ON: Tuesday, April 13, 2021 3:01 AM by The Stockdale Center

Although thought about the justice of warfare is highly developed, ethical analyses of intelligence operations—which can involve lying, manipulation, coercion, stealing and even killing—are relatively recent and conflicting. The purpose of the first week of the 2021 McCain Conference is to identify the general ethical principles relevant to spying, and then apply them to specific activities—including human and technical intelligence gathering, interrogational torture, covert action, and intelligence analysis. To begin this endeavor, the Center was honored to host Michael Morell, the former Deputy and Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He’s also the author of The Great War of Our Time: The CIA's Fight Against Terrorism—From al Qa'ida to ISIS.

Midshipman engaged in a virtual Q & A period after an initial interview section and a round of discussion.
