POSTED ON: Monday, January 11, 2021 12:00 AM by The Stockdale Center

We are sad to announce the untimely passing of Professor Deborah L. Rhode, one of the world’s most admired ethics scholars. Professor Rhode, who held a chair at Stanford Law School, was a true giant in the fields of legal ethics, leadership, and gender and public policy. Among her 30 books are: Character: What It Means and Why It Matters (2020); Cheating: Ethics in Everyday Life (2017); Adultery: Infidelity and the Law (2016); Leadership: Law, Policy and Management (2011); The Beauty Bias: The Injustice of Appearance in Life and Law (2010); Women and Leadership (2007); and many books on legal ethics and the American justice system. More than a scholar, Professor Rhode spearheaded a pioneering study of improving pro bono service, and she was the founding president of the world’s only international legal ethics association. Among her many awards was the White House Champion of Change Award for a lifetime’s work in increasing access to justice. And she was known as a generous early-career mentor to many in her field.
