The Oceanography Department seeks applicants for an Instructor of Practical Applications

POSTED ON: Thursday, April 18, 2019 2:37 PM by Alexander R. Davies

The Oceanography Department at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) invites applications for an Instructor of Practical Applications (IPA) in Laboratory and Field Data Collection and Analysis position beginning August 2019. USNA is a service academy and top tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in faculty teaching and research. The mission of the Oceanography Department is to provide midshipmen with a strong foundation in the theory of ocean and atmospheric sciences, equipping them with quantitative and critical thinking skills to enable continued scientific study and to recognize relationships between the environment and military operations.

Situated on the shore of the Severn River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, the Oceanography Department boasts a stand-alone laboratory with immediate estuarine access (Hendrix Oceanography Laboratory); a wide array of environmental field equipment; a micro-net that continuously monitors atmospheric and estuarine parameters; a dedicated oceanographic research vessel (YP-686); and proximity to federal, state, local, and academic partner institutions. These assets foster data-intensive, problem-based classroom and laboratory exercises, as well as engage midshipmen in cutting-edge research. The Brigade of Midshipmen comprises members from each United States Congressional District; therefore, the Oceanography Department values candidates with experience working with a diverse population of students.
