The 2017 Plebe Major Briefs were an undisputed success for the U.S. Naval Academy Oceanography Department. Throughout the day, over 100 interested Plebes visited the Oceanography Department displays in Sampson 102 and 103. This year, the displays and demonstrations featured the new, state of the art EcoMapper Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), rotating tank geophysical fluid dynamics experiments, drone surveillance and mapping equipment, and microscopy of estuarine organisms. Overall, feedback from prospective students was positive and the Department hopes that will translate into a wave of new oceanography majors!
Oceanography is one of the most academically diverse, exciting, and applicable majors at the Naval Academy. The Department boasts world-class undergraduate laboratory facilities, unparalleled internship opportunities, cutting edge research, and a revamped curriculum designed for a practical, hands-on learning. If you are interested in becoming an oceanography major, please visit the Prospective Students page on the Oceanography Department website or email Associate Chair CDR William Swick, USN at firstname.lastname@example.org or Chair CAPT Emil Petruncio, USN at email@example.com.
