DoDEA STEM Educator Workshops in Japan

POSTED ON: Thursday, April 20, 2017 8:00 AM by Angela Moran

USNA STEM Center professors Sarah Durkin and Angela Moran traveled to Japan in April to offer professional development workshops for Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) teachers. 95 teachers and DoD personnel from schools in Okinawa and Yokosuka regions attended one of four workshops held.

The workshops promoted hands-on, project-based learning methodology for K-12 formal and informal STEM educators supporting military and DoD children. Topics were presented in a cross-curricular manner and included chemical and physical properties of water; flight and aerodynamics; light, sound, and seismic wave engineering; circuits and sensors; and engineering design. DODEA teacher, Maryanne Tirinnanzi, commented  "We loved the fast pace of your lectures and the cool hands-on  activities!... and I plan on using your activities with my students."
