The USNA STEM Center and the Office of Admissions have hosted a Summer STEM Program for high school students each year since 2008. Many past participants have now reached college-age, and 292 of them have since been inducted as midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy.
There are currently 223 alumni of the Summer STEM Program enrolled in the brigade of midshipmen at the Naval Academy. Of note, 74% of the alumni midshipmen have declared a STEM major, reflecting the strong commitment to STEM fields of those who attend the Summer Program.
On Oct 25, 2017, the USNA STEM Center hosted a reunion and luncheon, held in Rickover Hall, for current midshipmen who are alumni of the Summer STEM Program. Alumni midshipmen attended, along with representatives of the STEM Center and the Office of Admissions. Also in attendance were midshipmen enrolled in the STEM Education and Outreach course, who earn academic credit for serving 15 leadership hours per semester dedicated to developing and implementing academic year STEM activities.
All those present at the luncheon enjoyed the opportunity to mingle, as midshipmen recalled their past experiences at Summer STEM. Midshipmen from the STEM Outreach course shared their own experiences participating in STEM events geared toward introducing young people to the excitement of STEM fields. Showing how flashy STEM activities can be, midshipmen investigated Bernoulli's Principle by creating a fire tornado and launching flaming tea bags. Alumni midshipmen learned about the many ways they can get involved in USNA STEM outreach.
