On behalf of the Office of Naval Research, the USNA STEM Center presented an educators workshop at Naval Medical Center San Diego on November 6 and 7, 2017. Twenty-four military and civilian members from various medical commands on the west coast and from Guam as well as Navy Child and Youth Programs staff and local teachers attended the training, offered in collaboration with the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED).
Attendees were introduced to hands-on activities in topics of interest to the medical community including chemistry, biomechanics, hearing and vision, circuits and sensors, health and disease, and neuromuscular detection and measurement. Participants had the opportunity to practice outreach skills by providing many of the activities to military children at the Admiral Hartman Youth & Teen Center during an afternoon STEM fair, and were able to develop activities of their own in additional topic areas such as physiology and skeletal function.
