NSBE Conference

POSTED ON: Friday, November 10, 2017 8:00 AM by MIDN 1/C Thomas Stone

On 10NOV2017, 10 members of the National Society of Black Engineers attended the Zone 2 Fall Regional Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. The conference was an amazing networking and learning experience for all attending members.

Friday included the opening session, followed by individual meetings between each zone within region 2. The United States Naval Academy is a member of Terror Zone, which encompasses most of the schools within the DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

Saturday included a series of workshops starting at 0800 and ending at 1900. Workshop topics included financing chapter activities, retention, building a better resume, and cultural diversity in the workplace. The Naval Academy had a strong presence in a wide array of workshops, however our presence was felt the greatest at NSBE Debaters. MIDN 1/C Paige Monk and MIDN 2/C Chelsea Folkes participated in a debate against two members of Howard University on the subject of computer science being taught at the K-12 level. MIDN Monk and Folkes won the debate, arguing against the addition of computer science in K-12 curriculums.

Saturday’s career fair was a great networking opportunity for those who attended. Many received business cards and contact information from companies specifically looking to higher military veterans.

Sunday included a closing session and the drive back to Annapolis. The 10 MIDN who attended the Fall Regional Conference thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope to make a strong Naval Academy presence a consistent tradition.
