STEM Educator Training

POSTED ON: Saturday, February 24, 2018 12:00 AM by Angela Moran

Mapping with MATLAB, Health Based Technology,  Arduino Coding, Solid Modeling, Space Sensor Technology, and Experimentation were some of the topics presented in a hands-on format and available to educators at the Stem Educator Training Workshop held at the U.S. Naval Academy on February 24, 2018.

Attended by about 140 educators from over 90 different schools in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey, the event was implemented by the USNA STEM Center for Education and Outreach. Teachers were provided an opportunity to also select from skills based workshops in programming, soldering, and robotics.

The workshop sessions were facilitated by 17 faculty and staff, including Pat Moran, Mark Murray, Beth Waitkus, Rachel Fees, Sarah Durkin, Hite Spencer, Gina Henderson, Christine Maceo, Pat Meinhold, Donna Weber, Joe Bradshaw, Dane Brown, Ike Roland, Jonathan Vance, Larry Ungar, Tom Lusby, and Angie Moran. Faculty and staff led hands-on lessons focusing on applied technology and engineering design with facilitation by 28 midshipmen.

In the afternoon, the teachers participated in an engineering design session, based on projectile motion, first building a simple catapult, assessing its performance quantitatively, and then redesigning the system based on the data collected.
