On September 8th, 2018, STEM instructor Rachel Fees and ENS Jackson Cotney participated in the 7th Baltimore STEM-Day Extravaganza at Morgan State University. The United States Naval Academy STEM Center for Education and Outreach was one of 22 exhibitors who presented hands-on STEM activities to about 600 participants from the public. Other exhibitors included NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the Maryland Space Grant Consortium, NOAA, NIH, the Army Research Lab, and more.
The USNA STEM Center’s exhibit was focused on different types of robotic arms: hydraulic, electronic, and mechanical. Participants tried a robotic arm challenge where they had to move an object into a goal using a hydraulic arm. These participants also used an electronic arm to replicate that motion which presented new challenges. Participants had an opportunity to build their own hydraulic actuator and a robotic arm end effector similar to the Canadarm on the International Space Station.
