The USNA Summer Heroes Youth Program (SHYP) focuses on engaging middle school students from Baltimore City, MD, Washington, DC and Prince George's County, MD through exciting engineering and science activities, led by midshipmen mentors. SHYP midshipmen and STEM faculty traveled to Harlem Park, Franklin Square, Elliot-Hine, Kelly Miller, Thomas Johnson, and Oxon Hill Middle Schools to provide hands-on sessions in robotics, engineering design, applied math, chemistry, mechanics, physics, and bioengineering.
About 950 participants, along with their teachers, were exposed to career possibilities and real world applications so that students saw how scientists and engineers make the world a better place and address technical challenges that face our society. Students completed team exercises and challenges, and explored science and engineering principles related to the many topics. MIDN Elana Kozak, Ariona Mayo, Elizabeth Grimmig, Mack Eshleman, MaryEmma Hughes, and Katerina Kennedy served as midshipmen leaders and mentors.
