POSTED ON: Friday, April 30, 2021 12:00 AM by Christine Maceo

The USNA STEM Center and the Office of Admissions launched the Chicago STEM Initiative in Spring 2021. This program included multiple virtual visits to Chicago-area high school classrooms to present themed STEM programming to 9th and 10th grade students, engaging them in high-level STEM content to inspire interest in STEM careers.

USNA faculty Chris Brown and Casey Rayburg along with midshipmen near-peer mentors delivered advanced STEM content to students at two Chicago high schools over the course of several virtual classroom visits offering hands-on activities in applied math and cryptography. A midshipman Q&A panel that focused on STEM majors and STEM careers was included in each classroom visit. Participating midshipmen included Ricky Davis, Max Kimmel, Courtney Tse, Kam Chumley-Soltani, Andreas Casillas, Lia Fourakis, Biron McNeely, Bam Bamanabio, Tom Dias, Mark Humes, Leetasia Midgette, Amy Hoang, Jamison Julian, Annie Imhoff, Jennifer Jung, Elana Kozak and Skyler Flietstra.

The Chicago STEM Initiative will resume in Fall 2021 with an additional classroom visits and culminating with a Tech Fair for participating students and midshipmen. The program was sponsored by Avantor Corporation and the Naval Academy Foundation, in addition to the Office of Naval Research.
