High School Immersion STEM Educator Workshop

POSTED ON: Saturday, May 1, 2021 12:00 AM by Christine Maceo

The USNA STEM Centered offered its first High School Immersion STEM Educator Training Workshop on May 1, 2021. Supported by the Office of Naval Research, this professional development workshop was designed to delve into multidisciplinary technical content in higher-level STEM classes and expand computational and hands-on skills.

The four-hour live, virtual event consisted of five academic modules in Epidemiological Modeling, Boolean Logic, Conditional Statements and Reasoning, Javascript Programming and Engineering Design. The project-based activities used household supplies and common computer applications, such as Excel and web-based programming platforms. Supply lists and templates were emailed to participants in advance and all attendees worked along with instructors during the sessions.

The academic content and hands-on activities were presented by USNA STEM Center Faculty Joe McGettigan, Christine Maceo and Sarah Durkin, as well as USNA Professor Mark Murray. Computer Science Professor Chris Brown created a user-friendly interface for the Javascript Programming module. Midshipmen Cory Harding, Courtney Tse, Biron McNeely and Ricky Davis assisted in the sessions.

High school educators from Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia and DoDEA in Japan attended the event. Maryland educators earned professional development hours towards a continuing education credit for MSDE certification.
