The Office of Naval Research sponsored the USNA STEM Center to provide STEM Outreach training to DON Scientists and Engineers from command sites throughout the U.S. to assist in their local efforts to engage students and educators in science, technology, engineering and math. Twenty DON S&Es attended the five-hour virtual workshop, which focused on Navy-relevant content and hands-on activities presented at a level designed to engage high school students and educators.
The topics were selected to represent emerging naval technologies. USNA Faculty David Farrell, John Burkhardt, Will Traves and Beth Waitkus joined STEM Center Faculty Joe McGettigan, Christine Maceo and Sarah Durkin to investigate the scientific principles behind Boat Stability, Archimedes’ Principle, Structural Mechanics, Sinusoidal Motion and Energy Transfer, Data Science, and Batteries and Motors. Each module included appropriate formulae, measurement, calculations and/or computer modeling to scale the material to various grade levels, platforms and venues.
