Career and Technical Educators Workshop

POSTED ON: Saturday, May 22, 2021 12:00 AM by Christine Maceo

The USNA STEM Centered hosted its first High School Career and Technical Educator (CTE) STEM Professional Development on May 22, 2021. The purpose of this event was to highlight the content behind the CTE technical tracts and to expand hands-on skills in the classroom and in the remote setting. Designed to address DOD and DON concerns regarding the scarcity of technologically skilled STEM workers, this ONR-sponsored workshop targeted the high-tech CTE disciplines: Electronics, Information Technology and Networking, CAD Manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing, Plumbing and HVAC.

High school educators from Maryland, North Carolina, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia participated in the workshop. The four-hour virtual event consisted of five project-based technical modules in Circuitry, Hashing Algorithms in Cryptography, Structures and Support Structures, Self-starting Siphons, and Evaporative Cooling, presented by USNA STEM Faculty Joe McGettigan, Christine Maceo and Sarah Durkin, and USNA Faculty Mark Murray and Chris Brown. A household supply list and a shopping list were emailed to participants in advance so that they could work along with instructors during the sessions. Maryland educators earned professional development hours towards a continuing professional development credit for Maryland State Department of Education certification.
