The Summer Heroes Youth Program (SHYP) engages middle school students from underserved communities in hands-on engineering and science activities led by midshipmen mentors. In June 2021, sponsored by Exelon Corporation, Naval Academy Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research, the USNA STEM Center presented a virtual but highly interactive program to 2000 students.
Sixteen midshipmen engaged in 100 virtual classroom visits with 12 middle schools/sites in Baltimore, MD; Washington, DC; Prince Georges County and Anne Arundel County, MD; New York City; and New Jersey. Students gathered household supplies in advance to engage in hands-on projects and experiments led on screen by Midshipmen STEM mentors. In addition, USNA collaborated with the National Park Service to deliver a livestream webinar, "Experimenting with History", on site at Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore as a virtual STEM/History field trip opened to every middle school student in Baltimore City Public Schools. The activities challenged students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills while exposing them to career possibilities and real world applications.
