The USNA STEM Center and the Office of Admissions completed the year-long Chicago STEM Initiative in December 2021. This program included repeated visits to Chicago-area 9th- and 10th-grade high school classrooms to engage students in high-level STEM content. The themed STEM programming progressed from applied math and cryptography in Spring 2021 to electricity and hardware-software interfaces via the Arduino electronics platform in Fall 2021, as a way to inspire interest in STEM and to introduce participating students to USNA and Navy STEM opportunities. This Initiative reached students at Trinity High School, St. Edward High School, Gwendolyn Brooks High School, and Phoenix Military Academy.
Each classroom session included college and career awareness discussions and midshipmen near-peer mentorship via panel discussions. USNA faculty Chris Brown and Casey Rayburg joined USNA STEM Faculty Christine Maceo, Joe McGettigan, and Lou Cox to lead the academic portion of the sessions. Midshipmen Ricky Davis, Max Kimmel, Courtney Tse, Kam Chumley-Soltani, Andreas Casillas, Lia Fourakis, Biron McNeely, Bam Bamanabio, Tom Dias, Mark Humes, Leetasia Midgette, Amy Hoang, Jamison Julian, Annie Imhoff, Jennifer Jung, Elana Kozak, Skyler Flietstra, Camren Taylor, Adan Valdez, Mckenzie Eshleman, Treyvon Poe, Brant Purcell, Anna Sawyer, Sigrid Schwarzkopf, Keelie Stork, Alyse Ray, and Keandre Harper demonstrated the hands-on activities and discussed the related scientific content and engineering principles.
The Chicago STEM Initiative was sponsored by Avantor Corporation and the Naval Academy Foundation, in addition to the Office of Naval Research.
