STEM Underway, Fall 2021

POSTED ON: Monday, December 6, 2021 12:00 AM by Sarah Durkin

The USNA STEM Center and the Office of Admissions collaborated on 'STEM Underway', a series of outreach trips to strategic areas to promote interest and awareness in STEM and the U.S. Naval Academy. Yetanda Massey, USNA Office of Admissions STEM Coordinator, traveled with midshipmen to meet with students on site at a series of locations around the nation, in coordination with local community partners. The USNA STEM Center provided curriculum and supplies for midshipmen to work with students on defense-relevant STEM projects and learn about STEM majors and careers. Topic areas included buoyancy, catapults, rockets, and robotics, with students actively engaging in the engineering design process.

During the Fall 2021 semester, STEM Underway trips included Detroit, MI with Wayne State Upward Bound; Pascagoula, MS; Dallas, TX; and Atlanta, GA with BEST Academy. Midshipmen facilitators included MIDN Biron McNeely, Gustel Bamanabio, Courtney Tse, Khadijah McClean, Andreas Casillas, Lian Dunlevy, Max Kimmel, Brant Purcell, Christopher Martineau, Treyvon Poe, Gabrielle Shepherd, Rachel Manhertz, Garielle Cleveland, Nicholas Hilaire, Gabriella Leonard, McKenzie Eshleman, Caleb Williams, Teresa Collins, Everett Stenberg, Miyuu Handa, Benjamin Negron, Leetasia Midgette, and Nikhil Vasan.
