The USNA STEM Center virtually hosted 45 Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) interns from October 1- December 31, 2021, as part of the NREIP Fall Engagement effort sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. The purpose of this program is to expand the reach of the summer NREIP program, which provides an opportunity for college students to participate in research at a Department of Navy Lab for 10 weeks.
USNA faculty mentors Ahmed Ibrahim, Ryan Rakvic, Hau Ngo, Joe McGettigan and Christine Maceo mentored the interns in academic research areas, including data post-processing on hull girder loads, artificial intelligence, FPGA-based embedded software, gas law relationships, fractals, light sensors, fluid dynamics, electromagnetic radiation and the inverse-square law, epidemiological modeling, image compression and heat transfer.
The internship included 30 hours of independent research, experimentation and data analysis plus 10 hours of mentorship, with a flexible schedule designed to fit into the students’ academic and work obligations during the fall semester. This is the second year of the NREIP NFE program. The USNA STEM Center is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Naval Academy Foundation.
