Ronald K. Machtley, a Representative from Rhode Island, originated in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa. He attended public schools and obtained a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy in 1970. He served in the United States Navy, 1970-1975. He earned a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1978. He was admitted to the bar in 1978 and commenced practice in Newport, R.I.. He was a commander in the United States Naval Reserve. He was elected as a Republican to the One Hundred First and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1989-January 3, 1995). He was not a candidate for reelection in 1994, but was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Rhode Island.
