Professor Dr. Gale A. Mattox

Dr. Gale A. Mattox is professor and a former chair (2003-2007), Political Science Department , US Naval Academy. She received the 2011 USNA Superintendent’s Civilian Faculty Service Excellence Award and served 2015-17 on the Admissions Board. Her teaching responsibilities include National Security Policy, Comparative European Politics and the Security and Alliances, as well as American Government and International Relations. She was Vice President, International Studies Association and Board member of its International Security and Arms Control Section; and Chair (2011-2013), International Security and Arms Control Section, American Political Science Association and Co-Chair, Women’s Caucus, APSA. She is the Visiting Senior Scholar, Foreign and Domestic Policies Section, American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), Johns Hopkins U.  In 2007 she held the Distinguished Fulbright-Dow Research Chair, Roosevelt Center, the Netherlands and Fulbright Senior NATO Strategic Studies Scholar, Belgium (2017). She was selected a Fellow by the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars 2016-17 and a Global Scholar 2017-2019.

She served on the Policy Planning Staff, Department of State 1995-96, was also a Council on Foreign Relations Fellow at State Dept. Office of Strategic and Theater Nuclear Policy and an international affairs analyst, Congressional Research Service. She has been a Bosch Fellow in Germany, NATO Research Fellow, Fulbright Dissertation Scholar and). Mattox has held the offices of President (1996-2003) and Vice President (1987-94) of Women in International Security (WIIS), Center for Peace and Security Studies, Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  She served on the editorial board of the Naval War College Press (2005-2020), American Friends of the AvHumboldt board and the Humboldt Foundation German Chancellor Fellows Selection Board. Other boards on which she has served include the Tactical Advisory Council, Center for Naval Analysis; the George Marshall Center Advisory Board, Germany; and the Forum for Security Studies, Swedish National Defense University.

Mattox has published 6 books most recently with S. Grenier Coalition Challenges in Afghanistan: The Politics of Alliance, Stanford U. Press (2015); with A. Rachwald Enlarging NATO: the National Debates, (2001); and with C. Kelleher Evolving European Defense Policies (1987). She has co-edited the series Germany In TransitionGermany at the Crossroads and Germany Through American Eyes. She has written several briefs including with C. Hoerst and L. Groenendaal, the German Marshall Fund Raising EU and NATO Effectiveness: The Impact of Diverse Boots on the Ground (2018 presented at Wilson Center), with U.CA/Berkeley on arms control, as well as numerous chapters, articles, and presentations.

 She has appeared on the Lehrer News Hour, Virginia Public Broadcasting Station, and other media outlets. Mattox holds a PhD from the U. of Virginia.
