On Saturday, January 25, 2014, 18 midshipmen members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) spent the day in Baltimore City volunteering at FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional competitions.

FLL uses robotics and exciting sports-like competitions to introduce students ages 9-14 to engineering and technology. Students strategize, design, build, program, test and refine a fully autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS™ technology.

The January FLL Maryland Regional Qualifier Competitions were held in Baltimore City at two different sites - the Y of Baltimore and the 29th St. Community Center. These competitions included hundreds of students from Baltimore City schools as well as the surrounding area. The NSBE midshipmen served as judges at both of these locations.

"These midshipmen served as terrific role models, took their roles seriously and quickly adapted to content and logistics of the various judging areas," said Jenny Beatty, Volunteer Maryland Coordinator, "They had wonderful interactions with the students, and got a huge round of applause from all present at the end of the day."

The NSBE midshipmen appreciated the opportunity to positively impact the community, and raise excitement about STEM. The group is planning to volunteer at upcoming FLL events in the region.
