Lieutenant Commander Joel Borrelli-Boudreau

Director


Lieutenant Commander Joel Borrelli-Boudreau, from Methuen, Massachusetts, holds the following degrees: Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music, Master of Music from the University of Miami, Master of Arts in conducting from George Mason University, Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral conducting from the Catholic University of America, and a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory.  In addition, he earned 77 Doctor of Musical Arts credits from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  


After enlisting in the Navy in 1997, he was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band.  He served as Principal Trombone in the Concert Band, and performed in the following units:  Next Wave Big Band, Brass Quintet, Trombone Quartet, and marching/ceremonial units.  His collateral duties included: Head Enlisted Conductor, Chief in Charge of the Travel Department, Ceremonial Band Conductor, Operations Assistant, Chamber Music Coordinator, pianist, vocalist and MC.  In September of 2010, he was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, and subsequently received his commission in October 2012.  During his first officer tour, he served as Director, Navy Band Fleet Support Unit & Training Support Officer at the Naval School of Music.  In November of 2014, he was assigned as Assistant Director, U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band.  Beginning in May of 2017, he served as the Director of Navy Band Northeast, and in July of 2020, he was assigned to the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO), where he served as a Lead Planner for the “Navy Week” National Outreach Program. He reported as Director, Naval Academy Band in March 2023.


In addition to his military assignments, Borrelli-Boudreau has conducted the following fully staged productions under the auspices of The Maryland Lyric Opera, Bel Cantanti Opera and Catholic University:  Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, Carmen, Trouble in Tahiti, La Voix Humaine, Suor Angelica, Die Fledermaus, the Medium and Madama Butterfly.  He currently serves as Director of Music Ministry at Galilee Lutheran Church in Pasadena, Maryland and has served as the Choir Master of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  As a trombonist, he has performed with the Boston, Baltimore and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras, The Baltimore, Sarasota, Florida Grand Opera, and West Palm Beach Opera Companies, and was a two-year fellow at The Tanglewood Music Center.  In 2017, he was a guest conductor of The San Pietro a Majella Brass Ensemble with performances at the Napoli Conservatory of Music, and Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, Italy.


Lieutenant Commander Borrelli-Boudreau’s personal military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, as well as numerous other unit and personal awards.
