Chief Musician Rory Cherry is a native of Dothan, Alabama. In 1995, he graduated from Dothan High School where he was a trombonist with the marching band, and electric bassist with the jazz band. He then attended Wallace Community College in Dothan where he performed as bassist with the big band. 

Cherry began his professional career in 1995, performing with various Top 40/Contemporary groups, including the cover band, “All Nite Dwite.”

Cherry joined the U.S. Navy in July 2000. Upon completion of Musician “A” School, he reported to Navy Band New Orleans (NOLA) for duty with the Top 40 band, “Big Easy.” After detaching from Navy Band NOLA, he reported for duty in Norfolk, Virginia with the ATLANTIC Fleet Band, where he served as bassist with the contemporary group, “Four Star Edition.”

In January 2006, Cherry reported to the U.S. Naval Academy Band as electric bassist with the Electric Brigade which he went on to lead in 2013. He also performs on percussion with the marching band and ceremonial units. Cherry serves as Assistant Operations and Unit Leader for the Blues & Gold.

Cherry's awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and the Navy Good Conduct Medal (five awards).
