Musician 1st Class Stephen Farrell

Tenor Trombone

Musician 1st Class Stephen Farrell hails from Niceville, Florida. Farrell is no stranger to military service, as both his father and grandfather retired after a combined 43 years of service in the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and Master Sergeant, respectively. Farrell holds a Bachelor of Music from Baylor University and a Master of Music from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. His teachers include Allen Barnhill, Barbara Butler, Charlie Geyer, Brent Phillips, Timothy Van Dam, and Joseph Alessi.

Farrell has performed with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and Waco Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he was a participant at the Alessi Seminar in Fossano, Italy, a weeklong international event hosted by Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic and professor of trombone at The Juilliard School. 

In 2017, Farrell auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Following recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, he reported for duty as trombone instrumentalist with the brass quintet, brass ensemble, marching band, trombone quartet, and ceremonial units. Additionally, he serves as Head Librarian, Brass Quintet Leading Petty Officer, Assistant Command Career Counselor, Assistant Minor Property Manager, and Assistant Recital Coordinator.

Farrell’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, and the Armed Forces Service Medal.
