Shape File Grouping
Create a shape file grouping on the Database
menu: .
- When creating the grouping, start with the first files
you want plotted last (later files will overlay and overprint those plotted
for you); the program will automatically create the order fields for
you.
- The grouping files are stored in c:\mapdata\database\groups\.

This creates a dBase table with the shape files to plot, the order of
plotting, and the symbology to be used.
- Order of plotting goes from 0 to 9, so the 9's will be drawn last (on
top). If there are multiple files with the same number, they will be drawn
in the order in which they appear in the grouping file.
- The "PLOT" field must have a "Y" to plot, so you can
easily turn layers on and off.
- You can then either have the plot from a specified symbology, or use a
numeric field for the coloring.
Plot grouping.
To adjust these parameters, select the Modify, Shape File Grouping menu
choice. This will open the dBase table which indexes the files.
- Right clicking on an entry lets you modify the entries, or change symbology.
- The "PLOT" field must have a "Y" to plot.
- The "ORDER" field controls the plotting order.
- If the "FIELD" field is populated, it must be a numeric field
in the database used to color code the plot.
There is a FILTER field and a PIXEL_SIZE field in the data base with the
grouping. You can apply a filter before plotting a shape file, and set a
map pixel size beyond which the file will not be plotted--if the pixel size is
bigger than specified, plotting will not occur..
Example plot highways in the US.
Change display for each database:
Adjust the display by changing the grouping file:
- "Load grouping" from the database menu.
- Modify the display options, using the
- "Display options" from database
menu with the option to change all the files.
- Display modification for each file from the table.
- "Update grouping" from the database menu.
