SLOPE MAPS

All maps of the Hanging Rock Canyon USGS 30 m DEM

Slope map instructions

Slope units, in percent.

Standard slope categories. Select the number of bins, the boundaries, and the colors.
Cross country trafficability color scheme.  This considers only the slope, and not the soil characteristics, or soil moisture, which both have impacts on mobility. You can get some idea of those from Land Cover maps.
  • Black is flat (0%).  It might be water covered or swampy, which would be no go on other criteria. You could look at satellite imagery, or landcover maps, to get an idea of why areas appear flat.  Flat areas are more likely in low resolution DEMs, like SRTM.
  • green is GO (1-29%).  Vehicles should not no problems.
  • yellow is SLOW GO (30-45%)
  • red is NO GO (>45%)  Vehicles will not be able to traverse the terrain.

In  Go/No Go scheme, yellow is added to Red.

Gray scale color scheme--a reverse grayscale can be very revealing for lidar data sets (Example urban lidar displays, including reverse grayscale).
Rainbow color scheme.
DEM Slope merge on satellite image. This has the maximum slope at 60%; anything steeper is capped at red.
DEM Slope merge on satellite image. This has the maximum slope at 45%; anything steeper is capped at red. Note that this has more red than the map above with a max slope of 60%.
DEM Slope merge with a DRG scanned map. Colors show slopes calculated from the DEM.
