ASCII XYZ Export

Option on File menu of  map window, Save DEM option.  There must be a DEM associated with the map.  This creates a large file, but it should be very portable for import into other software.

  1. XY Format:
  • UTM: each point in the DEM will be on a separate line, in the order easting, northing, elevation, separated by spaces.
  • Lat/Long: each point in the DEM will be on a separate line, in the order latitude, longitude, elevation, separated by spaces.
  • Long/Lat: each point in the DEM will be on a separate line, in the order longitude, latitude, elevation, separated by spaces.
  • MGRS: each point in the DEM will be on a separate line, in the order MGRS, elevation, separated by spaces.
  • ARC/Info Generate: similar to the UTM option, with a “1,” at the start of the line and commas between values.
  1. Z format:
  2. Decimals
  3. Header row: put in a first row with the names of the columns
  4. Thin: export only every nth value in every nth row

If you save in Lat/Long format with a header row and a CSV file extension, you can import as a database.

ASCII ArcGrid is another simple ASCII format, with much less storage space because the X-Y coordinates are not stored, but only a corner and the spacings.

Export will be in NAD83/WGS84.
