SO461 Fall 2014

Quiz 3 (Beach Balls)

Two versions, with the same area but two different earthquakes to analyze.

Map showing location.

This map shows the focal mechanisms for 65 earthquakes.

Looking just at the larger diagrams for events A and B,

1.       What type of fault caused each earthquake?

2.       What can you say about the orientation of the fault?  Be specific and cite approximate numbers.

Now look at all the focal mechanisms, and draw plate boundaries that make sense with the map patterns of focal mechanisms.
