Short Answer: The questions should be answered with several sentences (no more than a short paragraph). You must answer five of the six questions.

Longer Answer: This should be at least 2 paragraphs, and indicate understanding of the procedures and concepts involved.

Note that on both the definitions and short answer you have a choice of which questions to answer.

Short Answer. Answer 5 of the 6 short answer questions on this and the following pages.

 1.      Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a satellite radar altimeter to complete an improved bathymetric map of the oceans. 

 2.  Why did you join the AGU?  Why do they provide a special rate for students, and how does that fit into their overall mission?

 3.  What is the difference between ONR and NRL, and which more closely resembles NSF?  Why?

 4.  Why are publications and presentations important in science?

 5.  Some people in this class think a filter solves any problem.  This question is for them.  Could the data on the graph on the next page be filtered?  Why or why not?  Would the results be worthwhile?

 6.  What is the purpose of a graph?  Comment on the effectiveness of this graph.  What does it do well, and what could be improved?

Longer Answer. Answer this question.

Many oceanography students view computers as a necessary evil.  Discuss why we cannot avoid computers in oceanography, and what aspects of oceanographic data sets require the power of the computer.  What is required for oceanographers to move data from one computer program to another, and why would they want to use more than one program?  Provide concrete examples, and show some evidence of thought about this question.
