Research

I am a theorist working at the interface of atomic, optical, and condensed matter physics, where a field has emerged in the past few decades to address many outstanding problems relevant to, among other topics, quantum many-body physics and quantum information.  This field is hinged on a number of versatile technologies, perhaps the most notable of which are the optical cooling and trapping of atoms using laser light and the quantum control of photonic systems. Today, experimentalists can engineer a variety of exotic environments for these atoms and photons, and tune their densities, temperatures, and interaction strengths with a great deal of control. Such systems can be manipulated to emulate canonical models of solid state physics, or to realize more imaginative models that are not known to exist in nature. I employ a variety of computational and theoretical tools to study emergent phenomena in these experiments, and develop techniques to further their technological capabilities.
