Just War & The Challenges of Modern War

When is it right to fight? How do we fight that fight that's right to fight? What are these questions related? How are they different? What is the relationship between character, virtue, justice, and war? What role will you, as junior officers, have in prosecuting wars justly?

By the end of this block, you should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between Jus ad Bellum and Jus in Bello (II, V)
  2. Apply the Jus ad Bellum criteria to determine the justice of specific conflicts: modern, historic, and potential (to include humanitarian interventions) (V)
  3. Evaluate the relationship between virtue and justice in war (III, IV, V)
  4. Apply the jus in bello principles to actions within war (V)
  5. Evaluate the role of jus in bello principles to analyze the ethics of modern military actions (II, IV, V)

Complete these steps before you come to class

    1. Can you define the following jus ad bellum criteria:
      1. legitimate authority
      2. just cause
      3. right intention
      4. last resort
      5. proportionality of ends
      6. reasonable hope of success
    2. Is self-defense sufficient for waging war? When might it not be?
    3. How can killing other human beings not be sinful?
