The collection consists of a series of Standard Subject Identification Code (SSIC) Subject Files, a series of office files, and a series of reading files containing correspondence. The records generally relate to the Department's academic and organizational administration, procurement of supplies and training equipment, personnel, curricula, research, and various boards and other groups. There is also a series of personnel files for faculty and staff of the Department.
History of the Department of Weapons and Systems Engineering
Instruction in the operation of new weapons and engineering technology was given at the Naval Academy throughout much of the late nineteenth and first-half of the twentieth century. The establishment of the Department of Weapons and Systems Engineering resulted from the increasingly advanced technology of naval weapons systems, and the pressing need for academic specialization in weapons and systems engineering concepts. During the 1959-1960 academic year the academic organization went through a major revision. The Division of Engineering and Science, and thereunder the Department of Engineering were established. The Department of Engineering encompassed electrical, mechanical, marine, and aeronautical engineering. The Department of Ordnance and Gunnery was retitled the Weapons Department, and was now administered under the Division of Naval Science. During these years instruction in weapons system engineering was split between the Department of Engineering and the Weapons Department. In 1962, the Department of Engineering offered an elective course entitled "Systems Engineering," and the Weapons Department offered "Advanced Weapons Systems Engineering," for which the textbook was Systems Engineering. In 1966 the major in Systems Engineering, taught by the Weapons Department, was introduced at the Academy. During the 1970-1971 academic year the academic organization underwent yet another major reorganization. The Weapons Department became the Department of Weapons and Systems Engineering, one of the five departments in the Division of Engineering and Weapons.
In November 2018 the Department was retitled the Weapons, Robotics, and Control Engineering Department. Today the Department is located in Maury Hall and educates the Brigade on the scientific principles and engineering concepts of sonar, radar, guidance systems, and related military technologies. Additionally, the Department serves the Academy by offering: a Robotics and Control Engineering Major; an Honors Robotics and Control Engineering Major; and required courses on Weapons and Control Engineering for the entire Brigade of Midshipmen.
