History of the Division of Mathematics and Science

In 1845 the first organization of the Naval Academy provided for six professorships, one of them Natural Philosophy, held by Professor Henry H. Lockwood, another Mathematics, Astronomy and Navigation, held by Professor William Chauvenet, and Chemistry, held by Surgeon John A. Lockwood. The course of instruction in Natural Philosophy included the various branches of physics, including magnetism and electricity. The original course of study in mathematics consisted of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry for the junior class and algebra, geometry, and plane and spherical trigonometry for the senior class. Mathematics classes met five days a week and all midshipmen were required to recite daily. Surgeon Lockwood utilized George Fowne's Chemistry to instruct midshipmen in a series of lectures during the second year of the Academy's original program.

In 1850, a reorganization of courses resulted in chemistry being included for First Class, or senior, students, alongside instruction in mechanics, steam and marine engineering, heat, electricity, light, and mineralogy and geology in the new Department of Natural and Experimental Philosophy. From 1859 to 1866 Professor Augustus W. Smith led this department. His physique was the inspiration for the nickname "Skinny," which is still used by midshipmen to refer to the subjects of chemistry and physics. In 1865 steam instruction was segregated into the Department of Steam Enginery. Also created in 1850 was the Department of Mathematics, chaired by Professor Chauvenet, with a program consisting of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and descriptive geometry in the first two years, and analytic geometry, calculus, astronomy, navigation, and surveying in the last two years. In 1853 the courses in astronomy and navigation were assigned to the new Department of Astronomy and Navigation with Professor Chauvenet at its head. At the same time, the mathematics program was reduced to five terms and John Coffin, a professor of mathematics in the navy since 1835, became head of the department until 1855. From 1855 to 1870 the Mathematics Department was led by Professor William H. Wilcox.

In 1871 the Department of Natural and Experimental Philosophy was retitled the Department of Physics and Chemistry. That year the school year was divided into two terms and chemistry and physics were arranged into courses taught in the Second (junior) and First Class years. Subject matter consisted of magnetism and electricity; heat and climatology; chemistry; and dynamics and calculus. The department was led by Lieutenant Commander William T. Sampson, USN from 1869 to 1871, and again from 1874 to 1879. A new building, with a very rudimentary laboratory, was completed in 1869 and used for teaching chemistry and physics. In 1875 an adjoining building was enlarged and outfitted as a modern chemistry laboratory, equipped for use in general chemistry and qualitative analysis. In the same year, individual laboratory work was introduced in the Department of Physics and Chemistry. Elementary physics was switched to the first term of the Third Class (sophomore) year, and chemistry was taught in the second term of Third Class year. The Second Class had one semester of electricity, while the First Class studied heat and light. In 1878 Albert Michelson, Class of 1873, returned for a tenure of four years, and taught a series of lectures to the First Class on the velocity of light at Commander Sampson's request. From 1886 to 1913 the head of the department was Professor Nathaniel M. Terry, known by the midshipmen as "Cit" Terry. In 1895 a separate Department of Physics was formed, and in 1899 the Department of Physics and Chemistry was reformed to include courses on electricity. Instruction in what is now called Electrical Engineering was introduced into the Naval Academy curriculum in the early 1900s as courses in the Department of Physics and Chemistry. During the 1907-1908 academic year the Department of Electrical Engineering was established. In the same academic year, the Department of Physics and Chemistry moved into Sampson Hall, named after William T. Sampson, former department head and Superintendent of the Academy from 1886 to 1890. During the 1912-1913 academic year, the Electrical Engineering Department and Physics and Chemistry Department were merged to form the Electrical Engineering and Physics Department. Chemistry was included in this department. During the 1933-1934 academic year the department title was shortened to the Department of Electrical Engineering; however chemistry, physics, electricity, and, later, electronics still comprised courses in the department. These different subjects were taught by committees designed around the four classes of midshipmen.

By 1870 the Department of Mathematics was operated by an all-officer faculty. From 1873-1890, and 1897-1907 the Department of Mathematics was led by Professor William W. Hendrickson. During the 1872-1873 academic year the mathematics program was reduced to four terms. The improved preparation of entering students justified dropping arithmetic and the increasing emphasis on professional development led to the transfer of calculus to instructors specializing in mechanics and applied mathematics in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. During the 1876-1877 academic year instruction in differential and integral calculus was transferred to a new Department of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, which also taught mechanics, hydrostatics, and the strength and resistance of materials. During the 1895-1896 academic year, the Department of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics was succeeded by the Department of Mechanics. Calculus was returned to the Department of Mathematics and the program was extended again to five terms in the 1899-1900 academic year. At the same time, instruction in applied mechanics was transferred to the new Department of Marine Engineering and Naval Construction. Construction on Maury Hall was completed in 1907, and the Department of Mathematics' offices and instruction rooms moved to that building. During the 1907-1908 academic year the mathematics curriculum was reorganized and the department was retitled the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. As a result, the entire Second Class year was dedicated to the study of mechanics. During the 1916-1917 academic year the department was again renamed the Department of Mathematics. During World War I, with an increase in the student body and military mobilization, civilians were appointed to the faculty. From 1916 to 1918 the number of civilians, many holding doctorates in the field, increased from 16 to 28. In 1929 the slide rule became a formal part of the mathematics program and served as the midshipman's primary calculator until 1976. By 1948 the department was operating with three regular officers and sixty-one civilians, all above the rank of instructor. In 1952 the department moved from Maury Hall to two converted "shop" buildings numbered 133 and 286 located on Sands Road by the old electric power plant, in space presently occupied by Rickover Hall and the northern arch of Ingram Field.

During the 1959-1960 academic year the academic organization went through a major revision. The Division of Engineering and Science, and thereunder the Department of Engineering, Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Science were established. In this new organization, the Department of Mathematics, with 49 civilian faculty and 26 officer instructors taught college algebra, plane trigonometry, and analytic geometry and calculus to the Fourth Class, probability and statistics and intermediate college mechanics to the Third Class, and spherical trigonometry and applied differential equations to the Second Class. Electives were offered in linear algebra, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, differential equations, advanced calculus, complex variables, and engineering mathematics. The old chemistry, physics, and electrical science committees were placed together in the new Science Department, which then had over 110 faculty. As a result of this change, the Science Department taught chemistry to the Fourth Class, physics to the Third Class, and electrical science to the Second and First classes. Electives were offered in inorganic and organic chemistry, underwater acoustics, optics, laboratory physics, neutron physics, and later atomic and nuclear physics, and electric circuit analysis. The Science Department utilized office, classroom, and laboratory spaces on all levels of Sampson Hall, and the ground floors of Maury and Mahan Halls. In 1968, construction on a new science studies building was completed and in 1969 dedicated as Michelson Hall, in commemoration of Naval Academy alumnus, Nobel-prize winner, and renowned physicist Albert A. Michelson. The Science Department, and all electrical engineering and chemistry activities were housed in Michelson Hall. In the same year work was completed on the adjacent Chauvenet Hall, and the Department of Mathematics was moved from its temporary buildings and housed there.

During the 1970-1971 academic year the academic organization underwent yet another major reorganization. The Division of Mathematics and Science was established with over 165 faculty, and contained the Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, Department of Environmental Science, Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Mathematics. At the same time, Electrical Engineering became one of five departments in the new Division of Engineering and Weapons. In 1977 the Department of Environmental Science was retitled the Department of Oceanography. In 2016 the Department of Cyber Science was established. Offices and classrooms of the Division of Mathematics and Science and six subordinate departments are located in Michelson and Chauvenet halls. The Division offers majors in chemistry, applied math, oceanography, cyber operations, computer science, physics, quantitative economics, information technology, operations research, applied physics, mathematics, astrophysics, and general science.

Subseries 1c: COPIES OF DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY PROBLEMS AND DRAWINGS, 1877-1878 Box 13

Subseries Description

The third subseries 1c: COPIES OF DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY PROBLEMS AND DRAWINGS, consists of one oversize volume containing written problems and their accompanying geometric drawing solutions. Each problem is dated and numbered. The signature of the drawing author is written in the right corner of each drawing.

According to a letter written by third class cadet-midshipman Harry Phelps during early January 1878, Professor Hendrickson, Head of the Mathematics Department, selected the best descriptive geometry drawings from recent semi-annual examinations to bind in a large book. Phelps writes, "he has somebody [a cadet-midshipman] do each problem at the end of the year and has them all bound and as our names are on them, people who see the book can see our work. I feel as big as possible to think that he should pick mine out to bind."

Subseries 1d: MATHEMATICS ENTRANCE EXAMINATION GRADE BOOKS, 1867-1903 Boxes 14-17

Subseries Description

The fourth subseries 1d: MATHEMATICS ENTRANCE EXAMINATION GRADE BOOKS, consists of bound volumes. The volumes from 1867 to 1874 typically document the grades candidates for admission to the Academy received on oral and written mathematics examinations in June and September of each year. There is a page for each candidate documenting the candidate's name, congressional district and state of residence, and age in years and months. The candidates' grade pages are arranged in the order in which the candidate appeared before the board. Documentation of each candidate's grades include number of correct, incorrect, and omitted problems out of total notations and examples provided; the marks and averages for the first oral examination and full board examination in both notation and numeration, and vulgar and decimal fractions; as well as averages of marks for papers, the first oral examination, and the full board examination. Each candidate's final average is also listed, as well as the candidate's final qualified/deficient disposition in the various categories of the examination. The volumes for the academic year 1867-1868 contain a remarks section in which the examination board secretary annotated formal, and sometimes candid, comments about the candidate's aptitude, intelligence, demeanor and physical presence and habits, among various other aspects. The volumes for 1883 to 1902 are in the register format, with lists for each academic year arranged in alphabetical order by the candidate's last name. The examinations for 1903 are arranged by candidate number. The lists document each candidate's: initials, age in months and years, state of residence, and congressional district; the branches of mathematics they have studied; their progress in number of years in studying algebra and geometry; whether or not their appointment was a result of a competitive examination, and if so the number of competitors and whether the examination was oral or written; documentation for both May and September first- and second-examination day arithmetic, algebra, and final averages; and a remarks section stating whether the candidate passed or failed. If the candidate failed in the May examination and was afforded a second chance in September, the remarks section for the second examination states whether the candidate passed or was rejected.

Subseries 1e: MATHEMATICS GRADE BOOKS, 1862-1914 Boxes 18-32

Subseries Description

The fifth subseries 1e: MATHEMATICS GRADE BOOKS, consists of registers arranged by class, division, and section numbers. The Grade Books contain grades from the Department of Mathematics in algebra, arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, analytical geometry, astronomy, calculus, and descriptive geometry (drawing). Grades in mechanics and applied mathematics are also included. Each page of the Grade Books consist of registers entitled monthly class reports that document the month (sometimes academic term number), division and class of students, and the department and subject matter being graded. The last names, and some initials of students are listed, along with their grade averages for the particular month's weeks, a total monthly grade average, and a remarks section wherein more specific information is occasionally contained. Term examination grades, along with a final average are also recorded in some of the books. Included in some Grade Books are summary tables listing mathematics professor names, the number of students in their respective sections, and their section's weekly, monthly, and examination grade averages. The Grade Books also contain weekly and monthly class standing lists that rank all students in the class by grade point average. Some of the Grade Books contain reports documenting the names, state of residence, age and time at the Academy in months and years, and characterizations of habits of study, general conduct, and aptitude for the service for midshipmen found deficient in various academic subjects, including mathematics. Beginning in 1871 there are separate volumes for cadet-engineers that contain both admission examination grades and results, and general course of instruction grades. Beginning in the 1880s, many of the Grade Books contain a table on the first page stating the volume's term dates, the department title, and the names and ranks of the Academy Superintendent, Commandant of Midshipmen, and Department Head; and ranks, titles, and names of instructors and professors attached to the department.

Series 3: MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT - ACADEMIC COURSE MATERIAL, 1874-1944 Boxes 37-40

Series Description

The third series, MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT - ACADEMIC COURSE MATERIAL, consists of lesson plans, and instructional materials. The lesson plans list the schedule of problems and required readings for students to complete in the various courses of the Department of Mathematics. There are separate lesson plans for cadet-engineers and cadet-midshipmen until 1903. Written in the top margin of each lesson plan is the class number, academic year and term number, and the mathematical subject. The lesson plans list annotations for each day of the academic term followed by a problem number, or chapter from one of the course's textbooks, and examinations when scheduled. A remarks section for each annotation typically contains notes for instructor reference, as well as notes pertaining to curricula decisions taken by the Academic Board, mathematical equations, and synopses of certain examinations. Some lesson plan books contain orders from the superintendent glued to the front cover. Beginning in 1912, the lesson plans are organized by columns for the date, lesson number, textbook and lesson page number, textbook page numbers containing representative subject problems, most important articles or related review, and a section for remarks typically containing reference notes for the instructor. Also included in this series are three volumes containing written mathematics and mechanics questions and solutions created by Naval Academy students and instructors.

Series Description

The eleventh series, MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT - MIDSHIPMAN CLASS CARDS, consists of 50 microfilm reels containing cards maintained by the Department of Mathematics that document academic information about midshipmen from the classes of 1954 through 1980. The format of and information contained in the cards varies throughout the different years. Typically, each card documents the academic year, the course code, title, and hour value, instructor name, and any instructor comments regarding the midshipman's aptitude, conduct, and academic strengths and weaknesses. The cards document each midshipman's class year, particular class number (fourth, third, etc.), alpha number, division and section number, weekly grade marks, test grade marks, four week and course cumulative grade averages, number of absences, number of extra instruction sessions, term grade average, semester examination grade, and final grade marks. Cards from 1950 to 1971 include photographs of midshipmen. Cards from 1970 to 1980 include a section documenting the midshipman's academic performance percentile in recitation among all of the instructor's assigned recitation groups; performance standing, and ranks in class participation, and attitude towards the service within their respective section. Also included are instructor estimates of the midshipman's officer potential, and recommendations for Academic Board action. Some cards also contain rank marks for categories such as: performance in class, attentiveness in class, academic ability, attitude, appearance and bearing, and force.
