- Abstract: The records of the Department of Computer Science, comprising 4 linear feet of documentation, span from 1966 to 1997. The collection consists of 4 distinct series. The first three series: SSIC subject files, reading files, and office files pertain to a variety of specific subjects originating from the department's administration, academic organization, and management of personnel and material resources. The fourth series is a collection of personnel files for civilian faculty and military staff attached to the department from 1970 to 1986.
History of Department of Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science was originally established during the 1968-1969 academic year as the Computer Science Group and then in 1969 as the Computer Science Department. During the 1970-1971 academic year, the Academy's academic organization underwent a major revision. The Department of Computer Science was reorganized as one of five departments within the new Division of Mathematics and Science.
From 1969 to 1976 the Computer Science department grew from 2 to 7 faculty members, only taught a two semester one-credit course to the fourth class, and was not authorized to provide a major. During the 1975-1976 academic year, the curricula of the Management and Technology major, provided by the Department of Management Science in the Division of Naval Command and Management, was combined with the Department of Computer Science. The name of the combined departments was changed to the Department of Applied Science. The Department of Applied Science offered courses in resources management, operations analysis, and computer science, and one major was offered in resources management. From 1976 to 1979 the department's faculty size grew from 7 to 27. During the 1980-1981 academic year the resources management major was dropped, and the applied science major, offering tracks in computer science, management, and operations analysis, was introduced. During the 1983-1984 academic year the applied science major and all management courses were abolished, the operations analysis and research courses were transferred to the Mathematics Department, and the Computer Science department was reestablished. The Department of Computer Science now offered a computer science major with tracks in scientific computing, software design, and hardware principles. The Class of 1986 graduated the first ensigns with degrees in computer science.
In 1986 the curriculum was updated and approved for accreditation by the Computer Science Accreditation Board (CSAB). Beginning in 1985, midshipmen were issued personal microcomputers during their fourth class year. In 1991 the fourth class computer science course was eliminated and the department's curricula was assigned only to midshipmen taking computer science majors. Throughout the 1990s the department's facilities included a graphics software engineering laboratory, two microcomputer laboratories, and a robotics laboratory. By the 2010-2011 academic year the computer science major program included core courses in programming, data structures, computer organization, networks, program performance and efficiency, programming languages, as well as applications in artificial intelligence, graphics, and robotics. In 2016 the Department of Cyber Science was established to complement the Department of Computer Science.
